About Us - History

Photo Hendriks was established in 1954 by John Hendriks and his wife Christine. It was run successfully as a commercial and domestic photography studio capturing weddings, portraits, advertising, brochures, teams, schools and also serving as a photo lab for many Perth customers.

In 1967 we were the first in Australia to install automatic black and white film and paper processing, leading the way for the industry. Then in 1976 we installed our first colour printing machine, providing a new way for people to see their photos. During the busy times, we photographed as many as 6 weddings per weekend.

1985 brought the tragic death of owner John Hendriks, two of his sons, Wilfred and Ron took over the running of the business. In 2001 Ron left the company to start his own framing business and Wilf with his wife Carol ceased traditional film photography and ventured into digital technology, purchasing their first 6 mega pixel Kodak SLR camera at the massive cost of $15,000! All printing work was then sourced though local photo labs.

David Ryall joined the team in 2002 and help to develop the digital processes, investing in the latest software to stay ahead of the curve. At this stage we still did weddings, portraits, school photography, team photography and commercial shoots. In 2006 the decision was made to restructure the company into two with Photo Hendriks now focusing on school and team photography, and the newly formed Compose Photography concentrating on weddings and portrait photography.

Since January 2007 Wilf and David have run the company together, further developing the processes and techniques that makes our company among the best in Perth. We are keeping up with the latest in technology to ensure we always produce the highest standard of work at affordable prices. And as 2009 draws near, we are investigating the possibilities that Green Screen technology has to offer the school photography business.
